Making Yourself at Home: When Your Life Has to Make Room for You
📍 Room: The Living Room
Where do you feel safe enough to be fully yourself?
Making Yourself at Home
There comes a point when knowing yourself isn’t enough.
You have to start accommodating yourself.
Because you can know what you need…
and still keep living in ways that make those needs impossible to meet.
You can know you need rest and continue overbooking yourself.
Know you need honesty and keep swallowing your words.
Know you need space and keep filling every silence.
Know you want something different and continue arranging your life around what everyone else expects.
Knowing yourself is one thing.
Making room for yourself is another.
Rearranging the furniture
When you make yourself at home, you start noticing what doesn’t work.
Perhaps the metaphorical sofa is in the wrong place.
Perhaps you’re squeezing yourself into spaces you outgrew years ago.
Perhaps you’ve been keeping things because they were expensive, useful or given to you…
even though you don’t actually like them.
And maybe that’s what growth sometimes looks like.
Not becoming a completely different person.
Just rearranging the furniture.
What gets to stay?
Making yourself at home requires choices.
What feels good?
What feels nourishing?
What feels safe?
What makes you feel like yourself?
And equally…
What doesn’t?
Because creating a home isn’t just about adding things.
Sometimes it’s about removing what constantly makes you uncomfortable.
Expectations.
Relationships.
Habits.
Commitments.
Versions of yourself you’ve already outgrown.
You don’t have to justify your comfort
There is something particularly powerful about allowing yourself to care about your own comfort.
Not because you’re avoiding challenge.
Not because everything has to be easy.
But because you are allowed to notice when something doesn’t feel good.
You are allowed to want softness.
You are allowed to want beauty.
You are allowed to want things that make your life easier.
You are allowed to build a life that fits you.
Coming Home
Perhaps making yourself at home is less about finding the perfect life…
and more about becoming willing to participate in creating one.
One small choice at a time.
This.
Not that.
More of this.
Less of that.
I like this.
I don’t like that.
This feels like me.
This doesn’t anymore.
And eventually, you look around and realise:
Oh.
I live here now.
Reflection
What part of your life currently feels like it wasn’t designed with you in mind?
What would you change if your comfort mattered too?
What could you make more room for?
Keep unpacking.
One room at a time. 🏡
