Going Downstairs: What Are You Avoiding Looking At?
📍 Room: The Basement
What are you avoiding looking at?
Going Downstairs: What Are You Avoiding Looking At?
Every house has a room where the light doesn’t reach quite as easily.
The room where things get put down.
Old boxes.
Things we don’t know what to do with.
Things we’re not ready to throw away.
Things we’re not ready to look at.
And sometimes…
we do the same thing with ourselves.
We put things away.
We stop asking questions.
We tell ourselves we’ve moved on.
We get busy.
We keep going.
And eventually, we forget there’s a whole room downstairs.
The things we don’t want to see
Maybe it’s an old belief.
Something you decided about yourself a long time ago.
I’m too much.
I can’t trust people.
I have to do everything myself.
I’m not good enough.
This is just how I am.
Maybe it’s a feeling.
Anger.
Shame.
Fear.
Grief.
Something you learnt wasn’t particularly welcome, so you became very good at putting it away.
Or maybe it’s a pattern.
Something you keep doing even though you know it doesn’t really work anymore.
The same reaction.
The same kind of relationship.
The same way of disappearing when things become uncomfortable.
The same conversation you keep having with yourself.
Sometimes the Basement is full of things we’ve been carrying without realising we’re still carrying them.
Why we avoid the Basement
Looking at something doesn’t always mean knowing what to do with it.
And perhaps that’s part of why we avoid looking in the first place.
Because what if you open the box?
What if you remember?
What if you realise something you believed for years isn’t actually true?
What if you finally see the pattern you’ve been trying not to see?
So instead…
we close the door.
We keep the light off.
We tell ourselves there’s nothing down there worth looking at.
But ignoring a room doesn’t make it disappear.
It just means you don’t know what’s taking up space inside it.
The Basement
The Basement isn’t a punishment.
It’s part of the House.
And what’s down there is still part of you.
That doesn’t mean everything needs to be dragged upstairs.
Not every old belief needs to be analysed for three hours.
Not every feeling needs to become a project.
Not everything you’ve ever experienced needs to be excavated.
Sometimes the first step is much simpler.
Open the door.
Look around.
Notice what’s there.
You don’t have to clean it today.
You don’t even have to go all the way in.
You can simply let a little light through.
Reflection
What have you been avoiding looking at?
What belief, feeling or pattern keeps showing up beneath the surface?
What might happen if you stopped trying to make it disappear and simply became curious about it?
And if you opened the Basement door today…
what do you think you’d find?
Keep unpacking.
One room at a time. 🏡
