📍 Room: The Basement

What have you been keeping in the Basement?

What Have You Been Keeping in the Basement?

We all have things we don’t talk about very much.

Thoughts we dismiss.

Feelings we swallow.

Parts of ourselves we learnt to keep out of sight.

Sometimes we know exactly why they’re there.

And sometimes…

we don’t.

We just know we’ve been carrying them for a very long time.

Things we learnt to hide

Maybe you learnt that anger made you difficult.

So you became agreeable.

Maybe you learnt that needing people made you vulnerable.

So you became fiercely independent.

Maybe you learnt that being sensitive meant being weak.

So you stopped letting people see how deeply things affected you.

Maybe you learnt that wanting more made you ungrateful.

So you learnt to want less.

These things can become beliefs.

And beliefs have a funny way of becoming invisible when we’ve lived with them for long enough.

They stop sounding like beliefs.

They start sounding like facts.

I’m just like this.

People always leave.

I can’t rely on anyone.

I have to handle everything myself.

That’s just the way things are.

The room beneath the surface

The Basement is where some of these things live.

Not because there’s anything wrong with you.

But because at some point, putting them away may have made sense.

Maybe a younger version of you needed that belief.

Maybe it helped you make sense of something you couldn’t understand.

Maybe it helped you feel safe.

Maybe it helped you belong.

And something that once protected you can become something that limits you later.

That’s the strange thing about old coping patterns.

They don’t always look harmful.

Sometimes they look like strengths.

Being independent.

Being easygoing.

Being capable.

Being the one everyone can rely on.

Until you realise you don’t actually know how to ask for help.

You don’t have to empty the room

The temptation, when you start looking at yourself more honestly, is to want to fix everything.

Find the belief.

Understand the wound.

Change the pattern.

Move on.

But you don’t have to empty the Basement in one afternoon.

You can start with one thing.

One belief.

One reaction.

One feeling that keeps appearing.

One part of yourself you’ve been keeping out of sight.

And instead of asking,

How do I get rid of this?

you could ask…

Why is this here?

What did it once do for me?

What was I trying to protect myself from?

And do I still need it now?

Making space for what you find

Sometimes awareness changes things before action does.

Because once you can see something clearly, you have a choice.

You can question it.

Understand it.

Keep it.

Change it.

Or simply decide you’re not ready to do anything with it yet.

You don’t have to judge what you find.

You don’t have to be ashamed of it.

You don’t have to turn your Basement into another room where you’re constantly trying to improve yourself.

You can just look.

Reflection

What’s waiting for you in the Basement?

What belief have you carried for so long that you’ve stopped questioning it?

What part of yourself have you learnt to keep out of sight?

And if that belief or pattern once helped you survive something…

what might it need from you now?

Keep unpacking.

One room at a time. 🏡
