Turning the Light On: What Happens When You Finally Look?
📍 Room: The Basement
What if the thing you’re avoiding is trying to tell you something?
Turning the Light On: What Happens When You Finally Look?
Sometimes you avoid something because it’s painful.
Sometimes you avoid it because you don’t know what to do with it.
And sometimes…
you avoid it because you’re afraid of what you’ll find.
So you leave the light off.
You walk past the door.
You tell yourself you’ll deal with it later.
Until one day…
you turn the light on.
And you think,
Oh.
That’s why I do that.
When the pattern finally makes sense
There is something powerful about recognising a pattern.
The reaction that never made sense suddenly has a history.
The thing you keep doing suddenly has a reason.
The belief you’ve carried for years suddenly sounds less like truth…
and more like something you learnt.
Maybe you realise you aren’t actually afraid of being alone.
You’re afraid of being left.
Maybe you aren’t difficult.
You’re protecting yourself from being hurt again.
Maybe you don’t hate needing people.
You just learnt a long time ago that needing people wasn’t safe.
Understanding doesn’t erase the pattern.
But it gives you somewhere to begin.
Seeing the person underneath it
Sometimes what you find in the Basement isn’t the problem you thought it was.
Sometimes it’s an older version of you.
A version who was doing their best with what they knew.
A version who didn’t have the language you have now.
Who didn’t have the choices you have now.
Who was carrying something they didn’t know how to put down.
And perhaps that changes the way you look at yourself.
You can recognise the pattern without shaming yourself for having it.
You can understand where it came from without deciding you have to keep it.
You can look at the wound without becoming the wound.
Turning the light on
This is what awareness can do.
It doesn’t magically fix everything.
It simply means you’re no longer moving around the room in the dark.
You can see what’s there.
You can see what belongs.
You can see what needs tending.
You can see what you’ve outgrown.
And eventually…
you get to decide what happens next.
Maybe something needs to be released.
Maybe something needs compassion.
Maybe something needs a boundary.
Maybe something simply needs to be understood.
The light doesn’t make the Basement disappear.
It just means you can finally see it.
You don’t have to become your shadow
There is a difference between understanding yourself and letting every part of yourself run the show.
You can understand why you react the way you do…
and still choose a different response.
You can understand where a belief came from…
and decide you don’t believe it anymore.
You can meet the parts of yourself you’ve avoided…
without handing them the keys to the House.
That’s the point of turning the light on.
Not to become everything you find.
Just to stop being afraid of what you might find.
Reflection
What pattern are you beginning to understand differently?
What might be underneath a reaction you keep having?
What did that part of you once need?
And what does it need from you now?
Turn the light on.
Look around.
You might be surprised by what you recognise.
Keep unpacking.
One room at a time. 🏡
